Business Tips

Working from home - The taxman has changed his mind on what you can claim for working from home. Of course we would all argue that as we work from home from time to time we should be allowed to claim back a proportion of our household bills. Not necessarily! You will need an arrangement to be set up with the tax office and for strategic advice please contact Morgans by clicking this link or the one to the right.

New suppliers & VAT - Are you checking on the VAT position of new suppliers? If you are VAT registered then you will of course be claiming back your VAT on supplies purchased but what if the VAT number on the invoice is FAKE? Don't get caught out you can do a simple check with the VAT office by calling the advice line on 0845 010 9000 and check if the number is valid.


Feature: Increase your profits by 25%
When was the last time you decided to take a raise of 25%? It's amazing. I work with so many small businesses who would all agree that a hike in profits of 25% would be 'no bad thing'. In fact it would be wonderful, but guess what - very rarely do I step into a business for the first time to find that there is a strategic plan to do just that (or whatever percentage floats your boat). Sure, there's talk of 'business as usual' and being busy, but most of that is a case of Parkinson's law: "the work expands to fill the day", rather than creating a plan to do things differently and achieve a certain level of profit.

Amazing! I thought that is what we were all here for? If you are caught up in just working in the business rather than on it, then do yourself a favour - take a step back and start to plan a brighter future.

A trip to the doctors
A recent trip to the doctors soon had me referred to a specialist (BUPA cover of course - too much risk to the business without!). A cardiologist in fact, who carried out various unpleasant tests only to tell me, 'yep great engine - not sure about the fuel supply though' and it made me think about business as these things often do.

So how is your business's fuel supply and by that I mean your prospects?

How do ensure that the delivery of fuel is sufficient to keep the forecasts delivered?

I advocate designing a system that ensures you have enough prospects warmed to various levels so that the tap can be turned on when needed to deliver enough new business to the monthly bottom line.
