Introduction
Welcome back to Biz Tips and more useful information tips and anecdotes
for the world of small business.
How are you coping with
the recession? In this month’s newsletter I mention a survey
that suggests most business owners are optimistic about their survival
and post recession success.
I would love to know what you think so please click through and
take our
survey. This Summer’s first heat wave is on the way and
that always tends to lift the spirits. Perhaps a great time to decide
to turn the corner or up the ante? Good luck and let us know if
you need any help – we’re just a phone call away.

Minimum wage

The Government has announced new rates of the national minimum
wage (NMW) to apply from 1 October 2009. The rates will
change as follows;
-
Workers
aged 22 and over, the rate will rise from £5.73
to £5.80 per hour.
-
Workers
aged 18 to 21 from £4.77 to £4.83 per
hour.
-
Workers
aged 16 and 17 from £3.53 to £3.57 per
hour.
-
Sick
Notes to be replaced by Fit Notes
The Government has unveiled details of its new medical
'Fit Note' which is intended to replace the MED3
doctor’s certificate or ‘sick note’.
The Fit Note will contain suggestions as to how
an individual can be eased back into work and will
focus on what they can do and it will allow doctors
to record information about potential changes to
the employee’s work environment or job role
which could facilitate a return to work.

surrounding this area of your business is crucial.

your knowledge and booking onto an employment law

to deal with people issues in the workplace, this
seminar is only £450.00 and could save you
£000’s.

Recession surveys – growth plans
Business link have recently
surveyed 3200 businesses in London and discovered that six out of
ten are still planning to grow their business over the next year,
despite three quarters of them being relatively affected by up to
20%.

This clearly shows that even in a downturn people are ‘planning’
or at least focusing their minds on driving onwards and upwards.
I guess when a survey asks an owner are you planning, the answer
would be ‘yes’ if they held that representation in their
minds. Whether or not the plan is committed to paper or based strategically
is another matter.

Leadership
– who’s the skipper?
I learnt on a sailing holiday
a few years ago now that when a crew, no matter how small, set sail
they need a skipper.
Now the skipper’s hat can be exchanged from time to time with
others taking the helm, however one person at any time needs to head
the crew. On our particular vessel, a 45’ Catamaran it soon
became clear that I and everyone else on board would have key responsibilities
whilst on board.
The passing of the skipper’s hat represents delegation. Only
delegate to those you believe have the required leadership skills
and remember the true skipper delegates the task not the responsibility.
It’s interesting how the dynamics changed when we sailed right
into a squall and everything that you do becomes a degree or two more
vital. In any case getting to the destination requires the skipper
to maintain good vision, i.e. keeping your eye on the horizon, control
over the vessel, focus on the chart and compass and to ensure that
the crew all carry out their responsibilities. Given that we are sailing
a tempest right now, how is the skipper doing on your ship?
Call us if you have lost sight of that horizon, your charts are lost,
your compass is failing or if there are shouts of ‘man overboard’,
particularly if it’s the skipper!
Entrepreneurship
If you are reading this,
then there is a chance that you have already been christened an entrepreneur
(it may not always feel so good by the way). I once read somewhere
that ‘entrepreneurship’ is the power to create. If that
is so then what are you creating in your business?
Innovative products?
Same as everyone else?
Outstanding services?
Also-rans…?
Added value?
Little value?
Superb customer service?
No choice?
An outstanding term?
Is that phone still ringing?
As you can see having the power to create isn’t enough. It is
easy for someone with power to create a memorable experience in their
business for all the wrong reasons. Staying focused on your true values
and outcomes and then applying the power is where it’s at. Just
a few dynamics of the Strategic
Business Planning your business deserves.
What is your business creating?
